Character Sketch, II

A younger Juan.

A younger Juan.

I like this one. To me, his expression is a mixture of hope, sadness (suspicion, maybe), of someone who has learned the odds too young because he has to; his options are scant. How do you ensure a player’s success when success is defined as supporting a talented, healthy, culturally acclimated individual and paying him fairly? Unfortunately, success for baseball hopefuls in the Dominican Republic is rarely defined as such. All major league clubs have training academies in the Dominican Republic. They’re tasked with finding and developing promising young talent but few of these centers are properly regulated. The issue is well layed out at http://www.pbs.org/stealinghome/debate/dominican.html.
